June, 2018 marked the 50th Anniversary of  the closing of NAS Sanford, Florida!

Built in  the early 1940's it functioned as a training base for PV-I Ventura's and closed  after the Korean conflict. and reopened in support of the AJ-1 which functioned as  a carrier based, nuclear capable Heavy Attack aircraft. Subsequently replaced by the A-3D, and then the A3J-1/A-5A,/RA-5C Vigilante.

Closed permanently in 1968 the base was turned over to the City of Sanford to become one of Central Florida's busiest airports.

To those of us who were stationed at NAS Sanford

I was stationed at NAS Sanford...I was assigned to the Supply Department from
1`964 until the base closed in June, 1968...I worked for AK2 Rodney Chap[man.
Left NAS Sanford and went to the USS Independence S6 Division.

I went to NAS Sanford straight out of ATN "A" school. Got what was called an "A" school tour of shore duty. My orders read "Duration of Enlistment, NAS Sanford." I arrived there in late September 1963. I was compartment cleaning in one of the single story, "H" style barracks the day President Kennedy was shot. Worked in the Building 11 CNI shop for awhile fixing ARC-27s and ARN-21s. I moved to the Ops line and flew as observer in the station UC-45J until I transferred back to Millington for "B" school. Out of school I went back to Sanford to RVAH-5.

Surely there are more than me that were at NAS Sanford! I was assigned to the Supply Department from February 1964 until the base closed in June, 1968.

Did a short stint with Heavy Attack Wing ONE. Job was to recall ALL assets WORLD WIDE for update and  use in the Recon version of the Vigilante

On July 5, 2016 CDR Jesse Stewart "Red" Cleveland passed. He was XO when the base closed.  His obit was published in the Sanford, Florida newspaper.  He will be missed!

I was never with NAS Sanford, the system made me a member when I created this group.
