Does anyone know where former RVAH-1 CO, William P. Smith, settled after he retired from the Navy and what rank he retired with?

Greetings, Airdales of RVAH-1 from a 'Swabby', USS Ranger, CVA-61, WestPac, 1970-1971 and '72-'73.

Please forgive me for a bad memory. The RA-5C has been my favorite aircraft. I believe I was the only set of eyes, that I know of, that saw the ultimate fate of two of your brave pilots, when LtCdr Ross Renner and Lt. Max Joseph, (RA-5C, 156629), dropped off of the angle deck during flight trials off SoCal on Sept 27, 1970. I was on the port forward sponson observing recovery when the Viggies tail hook separated from the bird and the turbines flamed out and it dropped off the deck down toward me on the sponson. I hit the deck and watched it enter the water with canopies closed. The bird came back up and the canopies, seats and pilots were gone. I was in shock when everyone came running to the port side.

I just received Ranger's deck logs for that incident and finally brings some closure for me as to the pilots involved. Not knowing all these years has made for less than satisfying prayers for family and friends, but, I know that God knows.

If any of these men's squadronmates remember, please chat with me. I would like a set of dog tags for these brave souls. Blessings to family, friends and and all who knew them.

Ron Murphy asked: "
Does anyone have a good color photo of a heavy 1 AC in flight? I had a beautiful one but it has faded after 40+ years. I am getting a mural graphic made for the rear window of my SUV,"

Question: What is the minimum resolution that you need? I found this photo on the internet but I don't know if it meets the minimum resolution requirement:
