TOSSING A TERN

Attempting to sneak back on board ship at three o'clock in the morning following a heavy drinking session ashore, a sailor was dismayed to find the chief petty officer waiting for him. With the sailor unable to provide a good excuse for being late, he was issued with an immediate punishment. "Take this broom" ordered the CPO, "and sweep every link on this anchor chain by daybreak."     The sailor picked up the broom and started to sweep, but as he did so, a tern landed on the broom handle. The…See More

A "Whopper" of a Tale!

I was in a Dollar General store a few days ago, browsing around and trying to remember what I went in for. Suddenly my eyes focused on something that caused a mental "flashback". Back in my RVAH-5 days, our squadron was deployed on board the USS Ranger . This was sometime during the first part of 1970 to my recollection. We were sailing around in that beautiful part of the world known as the Tonkin Gulf.  One of my shipmates wrote a letter home saying how hard it was to find his favorite treat,…See More

Harry Shreckengost

Here is an update on my friend "Shreck". I did a search on the internet and found an address, then wrote a short letter, hoping I had found the right person. Sure enough, I got a phone call today from his wife. The news was not what I wanted to hear. He passed away seven years ago from liver cancer. I haven't seen or heard from him in 44 years. But the one year we spent together as Navy "buddies" back in 1968/1969 I will always remember. It always helps to have a good friend that you can depend…See More

Ed,

I am new to this forum, but when I read your inquiry about CDR. Lauren Everett and LCDR Paul Stokes' bodies not being recovered I thought I would give you my memories.  Wayne Newsom was the CO's plane captain, and I was on the photo line crew.  I remember being told all they found was one helmet and a seat pan and no bodies.

Harry Shreckengost

I went through basic in Orlando, then to training in Memphis, and finally to duty station in Albany with a good friend named Harry Shreckengost. He was from South Carolina, and everybody just called him "Shreck". I'm not sure which RVAH squadron he ended up in. When we got to Albany, we got separated. Just wondered if anybody else knew of him, and whatever happened to him. We transferred to Albany in the fall of 1969, and that's when I lost touch with him, 'cause shortly thereafter I shipped…
