Our (Heavy) Community

I'm very pleased to see our (heavy) community growing! We are a unique group in Naval Aviation in the number of squadrons and stations that once comprised the reconnaissance heavy attack community and our aircraft. Our Vigilantes are gone, but not forgotten! Our history goes farther back than the Vigilante. We must also remember the days before we "took pictures". The days of the Whale and the Savage. We have a long and glorious history to be proud of!

Hi, Richard. I'm not related to Cdr. Ray Murphy but I did have 3 cousins, Kenneth, Roger and Floyd who were in for the long haul. I made the 70-71 cruise on Ranger and the 72 cruise on Saratoga with H-1. Went to NATTC Millington for my last tour. Retired and now living in Bartlett TN.

Hey Richard,

Didn't have much choice when CRAW-1 decommissioned.  Left beautiful Key West FL in January 1980 and went to VA-72 at Cecil Field.  Stayed at Cecil until 1997.

Richard, I reported for duty November 1968 and transferred out October 1970, I had a split tour of Sea Duty.  Prior to coming to Heavy One I was with the Airforce in Tackli, Thialand. A group of twelve Navy types learning the F-111 Aircraft.

I was with RVAH-1 in the Operations Department on the Enterprise cruise (WestPac 1968), Saratoga (Med 1969) and Ranger (WestPac 1970). In December of 1970 I left the Ranger and flew back to California for my separation. Looking through my Enterprise Cruise Book I remember many of the names and faces and can hardly believe that what we all experienced was so long ago.
