Geo. I trying to help one of our squadron 5 veterans (fallen) Lt. Nick J. Mergo. His son Nick jr. contacted me asking for information and I though I would reach out to those that served together on the RANGER AND AT SANFORD. The Lt. flew several missions and especially one looking for one of our downed planes, so I thought you may remember something and could provide information that may help in his claim. I posted this in RVAHNECC asking for help and I will send info. on to the family.
You are correct I was in the BACE shop from Feb 1964 to Dec 1966. I believe you were AE2 the best I can remember. If I am wrong just caulk it up to old age. We made Westpac cruise on USS Ranger and then to the Med on USS America. I was then transferred to RVAH-3. It is good to hear from you. Keep in touch.
I was in RVAH5 from 63 to 66 I work on the line crew. I also went to the Med on the America. I have been trying to find out if anyone can give me the name or date that a ships company flight deck worker walked in to a prop on the flight deck. I am also trying to information of the date that a cable broke and if there was anyone hurt bad. If can help me with any of this or know how could my email add is email@example.com
Glad to see that you found this web site sir. It has been a lot of years since we were in Rota setting up that mobile maintenance facility for the wing.
We are over here in Hawaii for a couple of weeks. One of my friends is a dentist who did a Vietnam tour on a Navy destroyer in the late 60s. One of the things that we talk about a lot is that we were all so darn young and had so much expectations and responsibilities put on us at that very young age. I always think that you officers were much older, but in hind sight you were all quite young also.
After spending 35 years as professional in the business world, I am still amazed that we were expected to do what we did then compared to the expectations today of younger people. I tell my kids that it was not just luck, but a lot of hard work and dedication to duty.
