Good to see you are enjoying the good life..looking through your pictures on your location, I saw a past pilot. Address smith (in back of photo). Was he lost in combat? I think I was with him in rvah14. Keep having fun. I haven't talked to you since the 2004sanford reunion . Have good days. Delbert
Just wanted to put my two cents on your wall. Glad I got to see you at the last reunion, glad I got to serve under you, and glad to see you're enjoying retirement the way it should be. You were certainly one of the good ones during my 21 years in the USN....
Ok, it took me a while and some access to old brain cells, but I finally remembered - I kept seeing the pics of you on this website and I kept thinking "Where do I know him from?" I knew it wasn't from my RVAH days - and then it suddenly hit me... You were CAG for CVW-3 on the Saratoga and I was on your staff for a while!! See attached - You were relieved by "Bear" Taylor and went on to bigger and better things.
Hello Mr. Johns. We didn't know each other but when I was a plane captain (149299) Rob Weber and Mr. Delauer also landed with the nose gear up.We were in Key West and she sure wasn't a new, out-of-the-box 156 bureau number. Crazy thing was that when we lifted her with the crane, the gear extended and locked. We actually towed her to the hanger. Rob jettisoned his canopy, fearing that she may buckle when the nose fell through and jam it closed. It hit the vert stab. The back canopy wouldn't come off. The AME's heard from Mr. Delauer about that. It ground the radome down to where it was paper-thin, removed the F/O lens assembly, and ate half the gear door, which had actually opened.
Cliff: All is well! Diane and I are back in Bremerton with our rowboat. That's the only way out of town today. Golf game is slowly deteriorating; I am up to a 9.3. However I did manage to win the Super Seniors Championship three years running. My goal is still to shoot my age, but I am going to have to get older real soon! Are you near Charleston? We may have to attend VA-22 reunion there before long. We had one in Bremerton last year and there is still some booze remaining. We always have an extra bedroom here, if you ever get our way!
I do have a picture of the two of us alongside the nose of that aircraft. However, I'm in Stuttgart Germany until October 2011 and the picture is in Colorado Springs. I can't scan it in and send yo a copy until 11 months from now. Sorry!
Both Ruth and I have facebook pages if you can get to that to see pictures of our excellent German adventure.
