I never saw the bomb thing, could that be when the role was as a Nuclear Bomber?

I always found it amusing that the Pentagon felt that the Vigilante couldn't drop a nuclear bomb accurately on target. I could be wrong, but doesn't a nuclear weapon have a pretty good range on Blast and Radiation? 

I still think the Vigilante was the best camera platform out there.

I don't know about the RVAH-9 patch, but the original patch for VAH-9 had a bomb on it. I posted a picture of our patch a while back. Go to page 32 on "photos" and you will see it. I was in Heavy Nine from July 1957 to June 1960.

After reenlisting in in the Navy in January 1963 at Knoxville TN (My home town) I received orders to VAH-9 at NAS Sanford FL.  When in checked into the squadron Cdr. Wes Brooks assigned me to the Line Division.  At that time Cdr. Brooks wanted Plane Captains to be on Flight Orders and to receive flight pay.  Although I had desired to work in the Power Plants shop, the idea of "flight skins" had nice monetary ring to it! Also the Maintenance Officer word always   

 trumps an E-5!   We deployed with 13 A-3B Skywarriors in Saratoga early March 1963 with CDr. Kimmons at the helm. The Line Chief was W. D. Christi and he ruled the line division and called his troops "Line Pukes" to others and to us as "Studs" and no one crossed him!  When he restricted the whole Line Crew for our port call in Palma de Morca he dared any of us to go over his head crying to our Division Officer Ensign Lynch!  On that deployment in August an errant F3H Demon from VF-31 made an arrestment on a fouled deck during night flight ops.  The wayward Demon caused a massive conflaguration  on the flight deck. The fire destroyed the Demon and a Crusader and damaged a number of A-4s and one E-1B. Their damage was so severe that those birds were craned off at the end of the deployment in October 63. A VF-31 Plane Captain and two Flight Deck Personnel lost their lives that night. The pilot of the Demon was unscathed.

After a short respite and a deployment to the Caribbean with our A-3s in early 64, the Hooters began their transition to the Vigilante in the Spring of 64 and assumed the designation or RVAH-9.The squadron did work-ups and REFTRA in the fall of 64 and deployed in Sara late November.  As an E-6 along with fellow First Class's Bill Harkness and W.D. Tyler under the leadership of Chiefs Andy Bolton and Ferrante  we assumed the role of Line Division supervisors.  I had the night crew.  Some of the outstanding Plane Captains on that deployment were: Fox, Pledger, Philiage, Parker, Cassella, Collette to name a few.  Our Maintenance Chief was Senior Chief Walters and some of the pilots and flight crew were: Youngblade, CC Smith, DG Tise, GL Adkinson, Klein, Dunn, Marshall, Krause, Henson and Criswell.  The Maintenance Officer was Lcdr Zebrowski. That deployment was from the end of November to the end of July 65. After a month back at NAS Sanford the Hooters were slated for a one year turn-around with a rerun on Sara in the Fall of 66.  That schedule was ditched and in October 65 the Owls embarked on Ranger home ported in Alameda with an impending deployment in December 65, destination WESTPAC (read SE Asia/Vietnam).  The Ranger sailed in early December. The first stop was Hawaii for Christmas.  The day after Christmas AE-1 Panning and myself departed the Hooters at Pearl Harbor bound for Navy Recruiter School.  After Recruiter School I was a recruiter at NRSS Fairmont WV.  In July 67 I was ordered to NRSS Knoxville, TN (My hometown). I was promoted to ADJC April 68   while on recruiting duty and in May of 1970 received orders to report to RVAH-6 at NAS Albany GA.  To be continued with the Fluers (not to be confused with "flowers) LOL :) and deployment in Kitty Hawk and America.

I've put together a few ideas about how to search for that buddy we all lost contact with years ago when they or we shipped out to a new duty station or left the service..

1) Did you check here on Reccenet to see if they've "shipped over with us? Click on Shipmates in the menu at the top of the page (or click this link: Shipmates!) and enter their first or last name in the search box and click the magnifying glass icon (or just hit the enter key on your keyboard) and you'll see any and all matching that name who are registered here on Reccenet.

I2) f you know their approximate age and where they were from or where they went after the Navy you can get leads from this website without paying them for everything they may know: http://www.intelius.com/

3) There's the "Buddy Finder" on military.com

4) I've had luck just typing the name in a websearch like google.com.

5) If you belong to facebook or an other social media site you can sometimes find folks there. Just recently I found a former Heavy 6 and 12 sailor on facebook when I finally managed to spell his last name correctly. ;-)

Mike, wonder why we could not of had a set of vans at Cubi also.  Been a few since we talked but those vans were quite the undertaking to build.  The original drawings needed someone your size just to get an ADC hooked up.

If anyone is trying to find a "long lost buddy" send me an email to rvahroster@gmail.com and I'll look and see if we have anything on them. I can't release their info, but I will email them (if they have a current email address on record) and let them know you're looking for them. Tell me in the email what you're willing for me to give your old shipmate for contact info (email. phone, snailmail address). Then it's up to them to try and contact you back (If they don't respond or hide even better there's nothing I can do).
